The Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed decreed the removal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIP) across the country, especially politicians and business moguls.
Adamu excluded officers attached to government houses, the Senate President and the Speaker House of Representatives from the directives. He ordered the officers to return to their respective command district.
However notwithstanding the order by the IGP, it was reported by Punch that some senators who are still using police orderlies have discussed with the IGP who approved of it.
A security aide to one of the senators said,
“The issue of withdrawing security details attached to senators have been sorted out with the IGP. We are not affected.”
A senator whose identity was hidden also spoke regarding the issue, he uttered that as lawmakers in the country they are exposed to ambush so therefore they need police aide for protection.
In his words; “We are public officers who are exposed to attacks and it will not augur well if we are further exposed to danger when the police details are withdrawn.”
This is not the first time police authorities will issue an order withdrawing officers attached to prominent people in the country. In February 2019, the IGP announced withdrawal of its personnel attached to VIPs.
