FG Disburses N2 Billion for the Kano-Maradi Railway Project

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the Kano-Maradi railway will be completed in the next 36 months and hopes that the 283km railway will also be used combined with road transport for the production of freight and passenger convenience.

This was announced on behalf of the President by his media aide, Bashir Ahmad after the FG signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mota-Engil Group on the development of Kano-Maradi Standard Gauge Railway lines for a whopping $1,959 billion dollars.

According to Bashir;

“The new (Kano–Maradi) railway corridor will run through Kano, Jigawa and Katsina and through Niger Republic territory as far as Maradi. Towns like Danbatta (Kano), Kazaure (Jigawa), and Daura, Mashi, Jibia (Katsina) will also be affected by the new rail line in Nigeria.”

In September 2020, reports revealed that the Federal Executive Council had approved a $1.96 billion disbursement for the railway line from Kano to Maradi in the Niger Republic.

The Warri-Itakpe standard gauge rail line will also be commissioned by the President, running through Kogi, Edo, and Delta States.

However, on Monday, the Federal Government announced that the contract documents for the start of the Kano-Maradi and Kano-Dutse railway project had been signed.
